Flight attendant Johnathan Tafoya-Montano is being accused by the FBI of causing a fire on board an aircraft. The incident occurred on the first day of February on a flight from Dallas to Detroit on which Tafoya-Montano was scheduled and flying on American Airlines business.
“During the flight, Mr. Tafoya-Montano reported a fire in an aircraft aft lavatory and extinguished the flames. After the fire, the act was reported to the captain, the captain notified the control tower about the emergency on board, and the plane, already on approach to land at Detroit Metropolitan Airport, was received in an emergency situation. The aircraft landed without incident and all engers and crew disembarked safely," the FBI statement reads.
Commissioner Tafoya-Montano stated that he caused the fire in one of the bathrooms, at the rear of the aircraft.
“An investigation revealed that Mr. Tafoya-Montano set fire to the aft lavatory, and he eventually itted to what happened, so he was charged with destruction of aircraft or facilities. ” Completed the FBI report.
The now former Commissioner was arrested on March 1, but released on the 2nd on bail. However, Johnathan's entry into any aircraft without court authorization is restricted.
