Iran has launched drones against Israel, amid fears of a regional escalation following an apparent Israeli attack on an Iranian embassy compound in Syria last week.

Several dozen drones were launched from inside Iran. Iranian state media also confirmed that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) “launched extensive drone strikes against targets in occupied territories,” referring to Israel.

“We are monitoring the threat in the airspace. It is a threat that will take a few hours to reach Israel,” Israel Defense Forces spokesman Daniel Hagari said Saturday night local time, calling on Israelis to be “vigilant.”

A retired Israeli general, Amos Yadlin, told the country's Channel 12 news that the Iranian drones are equipped with 20 kilograms (44 pounds) of explosives each.

Israel has prepared for a “direct attack from Iran,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement Saturday night.

“Our defensive systems are in place; We are prepared for any scenario, both defensively and offensively. The state of Israel is strong. The IDF is strong. The audience is strong,” he said.

The Israeli leader also said he appreciated the of the US, Britain and and “many other countries”.

“We have determined a clear principle: whoever harms us, we will harm them. We will defend ourselves against any threat and we will do so with balance and determination,” said Netanyahu.

Unconfirmed information also speaks of an attack with cruise missiles.

The United States is providing aerial by shooting down Iranian drones.

Public shelters were opened in the city of Haifa, in northern Israel.

European press channels are talking about an attack with 200 drones.

Israel is responding with drone strikes against Israel. Airspace over Israel, Iran, Jordan and Egypt is closed.
