Azul implements a fuel conscious use program in Goiânia

Azul Copa Sudamericana Goiânia Maceió High Season Pernambuco

In partnership with Azul Linhas Aéreas, the Goiânia International Airport – Santa Genoveva (GYN) is now adopting a set of actions to reduce as much as possible the use of the APU during boarding and disembarking of the company's flights.

With this decision, the main airport in Goiás is now part of the list of 13 Azul bases that collaborate to reduce by up to 73% the use of kerosene by aircraft while they are on the ground.

The Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) – or, in Portuguese, Auxiliary Power Unit – is an auxiliary engine, usually located in the tail of some aircraft, and which is activated to keep the systems connected when the aircraft is on the ground.

With the program and the partnership of the airports, when landing, Azul flights are immediately received with an external source of electricity and air conditioning, ensuring comfort for Customers who board and disembark, without the APU being turned on and consuming part of the fuel of the aircraft.

The APU Zero program is now one year old. The first base to APU Zero in April 2022 was Viracopos Airport (V). Currently, there are already thirteen bases across the country: including, in addition to V and, now, the International Airport of Goiânia (GYN), the airports of Curitiba (CWB), Belém (BEL), Florianópolis (FLN), Congonhas (CGH), Confins (CNF), Brasília (BSB), Rio de Janeiro (SDU), Cuiabá (CGB), Recife (REC), Salvador (SSA) and Manaus (MAO).

According to Daniel Tkacz, Vice President of Operations at Azul, the results of APU Zero so far have increasingly stimulated the growth of the program and the interest in new airports through which the company's more than 900 flights circulate daily.

“The use of APU on the ground, in the bases that adopt our program, dropped from 42%, in April last year, to 14%, in April. And this resulted in a 73% decrease in fuel consumed on the ground – which prevented the emission of 49 thousand tons of CO2 into the atmosphere. At our base in Goiânia (GYN) alone, the forecast is that APU usage – which is currently 65%– will soon drop to 10%”, explains Tkacz.

For all these reasons, the program will be expanded, and the number of partner bases should not stop there. The forecast is that, by the end of the year, the program will have 20 airports in total ing APU Zero.
