A serious collision involving a Safe Air Boeing 727-200F freighter and a disabled African Express Airways MD-82 aircraft occurred at Malakal Airport (MAK) in South Sudan.
There were no injuries reported, but both aircraft sustained significant damage.
A Safe Air Boeing 727-200F, registration 5Y-IRE, was trying to land when it collided with the parked MD-82. The 727 freighter was carrying out a cargo flight from Juba to Malakal with seven crew on board.
Excursion and collision on the track
Local reports suggest that the Safe Air 727 left the runway during landing, causing it to collide with the stationary MD-82. The exact cause of the lane deviation is still under investigation.
In February, the MD-82 was involved in a landing incident at the same airport. The aircraft arrived close to the runway and could not be moved, remaining in place.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing by South Sudanese aviation authorities. They will seek to determine the cause of Safe Air 727's departure from the runway and assess the factors that contributed to the collision.
