Boeing and DHL announced today (16/07) at the Farnborough Airshow an order from the freighter airline for 14 Boeing 777F aircraft, a freighter version of the 777, with purchase rights for an additional seven aircraft.
The contract between the two companies is valued at US$4,7 billion, according to Boeing's current price list, excluding discounts.
Boeing highlighted that DHL is a pioneer customer with the 777F, and is on the list of the first companies that operated with the aircraft back in 2009, when the model entered the market.
With these additional orders, DHL will double the size of its current fleet of 777F aircraft, allowing it to substantially increase its cargo carrying capacity, in addition to replacing older aircraft in the future.
According to Boeing, last year the global air cargo market grew by 9%, more than double the previously projected growth rate of around 4,2%.
In January 2018, above-trend growth continued with an 8% increase in demand.
The 777 Freighter is based on the 777-200LR airliner and can fly 9070 kilometers with a payload of 112 tons.
