Boeing may produce freighter version of the 787 Dreamliner

Boeing 787 787F cargo freighter variant

In his most recent statement, David Calhoun, CEO of Boeing, said that the manufacturer may in the coming years announce a variant of the 787 Dreamliner aimed at exclusive cargo operations.

However, one of the main reasons for betting on the 787 freighter is the fact that both the 767F and the previous generation 777F will end their production by mid-2027 due to carbon dioxide emission regulations, requiring less polluting and efficient aircraft, such as in the case of the 787 plus the 777X.

“We know there is value in it (787F), but we will accelerate all of our freighter developments. We have a 777 under development and a hot market for the 767”, said David Calhoun to the portal Simple flying.

Despite the optimism for the production of the 787F, there are reservations for adapting the model, because the carbon fiber fuselage can become a barrier to the installation and reinforcement of larger cargo doors.

Historically, virtually all Boeing widebody models have had a cargo variant, leaving the exception of the 787, however, the manufacturer sees enormous potential for this model, which has more than 1.500 units sold only for enger transport.

By all indications, it is very likely that the 787 will have the same success as the 767-300 for cargo transport, but it will be necessary not to make the same Dreamliner production mistakes that embittered 14 months of stoppage in aircraft deliveries.
