After it was announced that Dave Calhoun would leave his position in 2024, Boeing chose Kelly Ortberg to assume the presidency and CEO. The choice was anticipated by The Air Current yesterday and has just been confirmed by Boeing. Calhoun has served in the role of president and CEO since January 2020.
Ortberg, who was previously CEO of collins aerospace and RockwellCollins and served as a consultant to the CEO of RTX, currently co-leads an organization that organizes annual school robotics competitions. He will begin his role at Boeing on August 8, 2024. The announcement of his appointment comes at the same time that Boeing reveals its second quarter results, following a significant increase in orders during the Farnborough International Airshow 2024.
Dave Calhoun announced his intention to step down as CEO and President of Boeing in March 2024. The news came after several incidents, most notably a Boeing 737 MAX from Alaska Airlines losing a door in mid-flight. There has been a lot of speculation about who would take on the top job since Calhoun announced his resignation, and now we have an answer.
Kelly Ortberg is set to begin her new role as CEO and President on August 8th, just a little over a week from now. Regarding her appointment, Ortberg said:
“I am extremely honored and humbled to this iconic company. Boeing has a tremendous and rich history as a leader and pioneer in our industry, and I am committed to working together with the company's more than 170.000 dedicated employees to continue that tradition, with safety and quality at the forefront. There’s a lot of work to be done, and I’m eager to get started.”
Graduated in Mechanical Engineering from University of Iowa, Ortberg has more than 35 years of aviation experience. At 64, he has held senior positions, including CEO of collins aerospace and RockwellCollins. He began his career in Collins in 1987 as program manager and after 26 years he became CEO. He retired from RTX in 2021.
Many hope that Ortberg's appointment will allow Boeing to turn over a new leaf after the problems the company has had of late.
