Leonardo and Bristow announced an agreement that includes an order for 10 AW189 super medium helicopters and 10 purchase options.
Bristow is currently operating 21 AW189 helicopters worldwide, and another five will roll off the assembly line from 2024. The new contract covers a fleet expansion plan for the period 2025 to 2028. Bristow uses the AW189 in its Offshore Energy Services business line, as well as its Government Services business line, ing search and rescue operations in the UK, the Netherlands and, from 2025, Ireland. The AW189 is a leader in the super medium market and offers long range, high resistance and high capacity. Modern and safe, the model is similar to larger and heavier helicopters, in addition to allowing lower operating costs.
Leonardo and Bristow have collaborated for over 28 years operating a range of models including the single-engine AW119, light twin-engine AW109, mid-engine AW139 and super-medium AW189. Bristow's Leonardo helicopter fleet will reach almost 110 units with the arrival of these 10 additional AW189 helicopters.
In 2022, the companies signed a 10-year global service agreement for Bristow's offshore fleet, applicable to its AW139 and AW189 fleet, in operation around the world. This exclusive service agreement aims to provide more efficient overall logistics and savings for the operator, highlighting the value of Leonardo's logistics service offerings, increasing performance across all regions.
Belonging to the AWFamily product family, the AW189 (8,3/8,6 tonnes) combines superior payload and range with advanced technologies to successfully operate a wide range of missions such as search and rescue, energy sector , transportation engers, firefighting and law enforcement. The helicopter's unique features include the main transmission's ability to run without oil for 50 minutes and an integrated auxiliary power unit.
The AW189 is available with more than 200 certified kits and is supplied with a comprehensive package of and training services, tailored to meet specific customer needs in order to maximize mission effectiveness and operations safety. The model is also certified for an automatic transmission system that allows the aircraft to send performance data to a ground station using satellite communication during flight, via 4G cellular connection or Wi-Fi when on the ground. It offers a secure way to share an accurate picture of each flight so that Leonardo experts can quickly evaluate the data, thereby optimizing maintenance and .
More than 140 AW189s have been ordered and more than 90 have been delivered to operators around the world to date. After 10 years of its certification, the AW189 continues to be the most successful super-medium category helicopter in the world in of market share, number of operators, presence in countries and diversity of applications.
