The IAG Group had internal conversations about the renewal of the British Airways fleet, which were suspended due to the pandemic in 2020.
British Airways currently has a letter of intent to purchase 200 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, signed in 2019 during the Paris Airshow. At the time, the British company wanted a mix of 737 MAX 8 and 10 aircraft, the largest version of Boeing's narrowbody.
The $24 billion deal, when factoring in the list price, could close soon with Boeing, according to the sources. Deliveries of this order should be carried out from 2024, according to the source.
Negotiations are ongoing, and could include another 50 planes for use by Vueling, Iberia's low-cost arm. Incidentally, this is the reason why the deal has not yet been closed, in addition to the traditional discounts that an order of this size receives.

The IAG Group also currently has purchase options for Airbus' A320neo family aircraft, carried over from previous orders. Iberia opted for Airbus narrobody aircraft to renew its fleet, but British Airways went the opposite way.
Also an Airbus customer currently for narrowbody aircraft, the British company opted for the Boeing 737 MAX.
