The Brazilian AMX

In the late 1970s, Brazil and Italy teamed up to develop an attack and interdiction jet. The work resulted in the AMX fighter-bomber, which was recently retired from the Italian Air Force, where it was called the A-11 Ghibli.

If in Italy the A-11 says goodbye to active service, in Brazil the A-1 AMX will remain in activity for a while longer. The model ed the FAB in 1990, taking over functions performed by the also Italian AT-26 Xavante (MB-326). Although they have undergone recent upgrades, the Brazilian AMXs are at the end of their operational life.

Of the 44 aircraft planned, only 11 were modernized and all are at the Santa Maria Air Base (RS), where they are used by the Poker and Centauro squadrons in attack and tactical reconnaissance. The retirement of A-1s from the Brazilian Air Force should occur between 2025 and 2028.
