British investigators are investigating a near collision between two Cessna Caravan 208 aircraft at Sibson airfield, near Peterborough.

Sibson Airfield Control realized that the aircraft were very close to each other, but the aircraft pilots did not realize the proximity of both aircraft during the landing. Therefore, the controller ordered the aircraft that was higher than the other to make a go-around and proceed to a new circuit. The distance between the aircraft was 5 seconds.

"As a result, the superior pilot's mental model was that there were no other aircraft in the final, and therefore they were effectively [first in line to land]," adds. When the lower aircraft called again that it was on final approach, the upper pilot interpreted the call to mean that this aircraft was behind them.

One of the Caravan 208s was flying for a parachute jump, and after the jumps it was returning for an approach to runway 06. The other aircraft, operated by the same company, was training pilots and carrying out a

“All highlighted the dangers of driving highly dynamic junctions to busy airfields”, says the Board of Airprox.

One of the measures that can be taken and that were raised by the airfield aviators is that during the practice of parachute jumping, stop aircraft traffic so that it is safer for everyone.
