Construction of the new runway at Macaé Airport reaches 80%

One of the largest infrastructure projects underway in the State of Rio de Janeiro – the construction of the new runway at Macaé Airport – has entered the final stretch. With the asphalt paving completed, the work completed more than 80% of the planned services.

With an investment of R$220 million from Zurich Airport Brasil, the concessionaire that manages the Norte Fluminense airport, the work meets a growing demand from the oil and gas sector. In the first half of this year alone, 102 thousand engers ed through Macaé Airport, in 2023 there was a 10% increase in movement compared to 2022.

Currently, marking, lighting and signage services, grass planting and construction of the fence to delimit the new operational area are being carried out. In parallel, the paving of the new apron is being concreted, which will have capacity for 10 rotary-wing aircraft and the structure of the current apron is being reinforced. After completing this stage, the approval process with ANAC takes place, which is scheduled for December this year.

The new 1.410 meter long runway will be delivered in the first half of 2025 and will increase the category of the airport that will be able to receive larger aircraft – code C. Furthermore, after the inauguration the terminal will become the only one in Brazil based offshore operational with two runways.

The work began in June 2023 and is carried out by the Bem Voar consortium, formed by the construction companies Barbosa Mello (CBM) and Engeform Engenharia. Even with the work in progress, flights by rotary-wing aircraft, such as helicopters, which are the main movement of the Airport, continue to operate regularly.
