The Department of Air Space Control (DECEA) launched this past week a post listing the busiest airports in Brazil, in of number of air movements (landings and takeoffs).
The data are provided by the agency, which is responsible for regulating air traffic in Brazil. You can also find this information on the Air Traffic Statistical Yearbook (Ref 2017).
All data below refer to the 12 months and 365 days of 2017, including an annual result.
So let's see which are the busiest airports?
1 – Guarulhos International Airport (SP)

For years, Guarulhos Airport has been highlighted as the busiest in the country, despite its limited runway, which restricts the number of takeoffs and landings. In 2017 alone, the terminal (as a whole) handled almost 38 million engers, resulting in 271.237 landing and take-off movements from the site.
The site has three terminals, with the capacity to process up to 42 million engers per year. A good part of its air traffic is made up of international flights, being the main gateway to Brazil today, it is also the only one that receives the Airbus A380 daily on a regular international flight.
2 – Congonhas Airport (SP)
Congonhas Airport gained prominence in recent years, when it managed to overtake Brasília Airport and gained its position as the second busiest in the country, despite only receiving domestic flights and having a clear runway limitation.
There were 223.989 landing and takeoff movements, in addition to receiving almost 22 million engers.
3 – Brasília International Airport (DF)
Brasília Airport stands out as a huge hub for the domestic market, from which we can reach several cities in Brazil, including many capitals. In 2017 it was the third busiest, with 158.507 take-offs and landings and almost 17 million engers transported.
The outlook this year is for improvement, with new international flights and a reheating of the domestic aviation market.
4 – Galeão International Airport (RJ)
Galeão Airport stands out for the various international flights it receives daily, being one of the main gateways to Brazil after Guarulhos.
In 2017, there were 127.092 landings and takeoffs, despite the 16 million engers transported. The difference between this number and Brasília Airport is precisely due to international flights, which are carried out with larger aircraft and increase the number of engers in the place, but do not require a greater number of movements, while Brasília's traffic is mainly composed of by aircraft such as the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320.
5 – Santos Dumont Airport (RJ)

Santos Dumont only operates domestic and short-haul flights, but even this fact did not remove the 5th place from the airport, which ed 118.149 movements in 2017 and received 9,2 million engers.
In of the number of movements, the airport is a record and secured the 5th place in this regard, due to the traffic of small executive aircraft and the small planes that operate in the area. But in number of engers Santos Dumont is 7th in the national ranking.
6 – Viracopos International Airport, in Campinas (SP)

Viracopos Airport is a major hub for Azul Linhas Aéreas, only last year I landed there 4 times, and in two I went to São Paulo.
The large concentration of aircraft secured the 6th place for Viracopos, which ed 112.772 movements in 2017, in addition to transporting 9,3 million engers in the period.
7 – Confins International Airport, in the metropolitan region of Belo Horizonte (MG)

Confins Airport was significantly overhauled after the private sector took over the site, and gained even more infrastructure to receive 100.593 takeoffs and landings in 2017, in addition to transporting 10,1 million engers.
In of the number of engers transported, the location ranks 5th in the country, ahead of SDU (Santos Dumont) and Viracopos, despite having a smaller movement of aircraft, the same effect found at Galeão Airport.
