The Research Foundation of the State of São Paulo (FAPESP) announced, during the ceremony commemorating the 60th anniversary of its creation, the shared investment with the Brazilian Aeronautical Company (EMBRAER), in the amount of R$ 48 million for research in air mobility to be carried out at the Technological Institute of Aeronautics (ITA), located in São José dos Campos (SP).
The event was attended by leaders and researchers from the academic community of São Paulo, government representatives and businessmen with activities linked to development, technology and innovation.
With a five-year schedule, with the possibility of renewal for another five years, the resources will be applied in an Engineering Research Center (E) for the air mobility of the future, to be created at the Institute. The projects will involve high-level training of human resources in topics of interest to the defense industrial base and the Brazilian aerospace sector.
According to the President of FAPESP, Marco Antonio Zago, these works will be carried out tly by professors from ITA, from the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP) and from the School of Engineering of São Carlos, and by engineers from EMBRAER, with a remarkable performance by fellows of different levels , from scientific initiation to postdoctoral studies, which will have adequate infrastructure, istrative and governance mechanisms at their disposal.
“FAPESP's partnership with EMBRAER and ITA will certainly be fruitful and will offer answers to one of the great challenges to be faced by research in the coming years: the transition to a low-carbon economy associated with advanced manufacturing”, highlighted.
The unprecedented research in Brazil will bring together representatives of the scientific community and professionals from the aeronautics industry in activities based on three pillars: low-carbon aviation, autonomous systems and advanced manufacturing. The initiative creates a favorable environment for the dissemination of knowledge, training of highly qualified human resources and the production of high-impact scientific publications.
Embraer's Vice President of Engineering, Technological Development and Corporate Strategy, Luís Carlos Affonso, celebrated the approval of the Center. ,
“We are very excited about the approval of the Engineering Research Center focused on the air mobility of the future, in partnership with ITA and FAPESP. I am sure it will be an excellent example of cooperation between the company, government and academia with the purpose of contributing to the definition of zero carbon aviation of the future, generating value for society as a whole”, said.
According to the Rector of ITA, Professor Anderson Correia, in recent months, the institutions have described together the scope of research and the main activities for implementing the partnership that proposes innovative technological solutions that will enhance the competitiveness of the global innovation ecosystem.
“ITA was formed on the triple helix model, at the intersection of academia, government and industry. This initiative is yet another icon of this model, which will expand the training of human resources in strategic areas for EMBRAER, the FAB and the sector's production chain. It will also promote international integration to meet the challenges of future air mobility.”, informed.
Activities such as the one proposed by the E guide and enable the conditions for technology transfer between the industrial, public and third sector sectors, strengthening ties and innovations through partnership models and intellectual property management, generation of new businesses, incubation and stimulus to entrepreneurial activity to apply the research results.
The Researcher and Director responsible for the E, Professor Doctor Domingos Alves Rade, from the Mechanical Engineering Division of ITA, communicated that the general objective is the development of very high level research works, dedicated to innovative themes, whose investigation is necessary for formatting of future aviation, such as electric propulsion, advanced manufacturing and autonomous systems.
“The Center will also have a strong role in of Technological Transfer for existing companies and those to be created, and also in of education and the dissemination of knowledge to society”, he emphasized.
