A Embraer today delivered the last modernized AF-1 fighter (AF-1B) to the Brazilian Navy. The ceremony was held at Embraer's industrial unit in Gavião Peixoto, in the interior of São Paulo.
In total, within the AF-1 program (Navy designation for the McDonnell Douglas A-4 Skyhawk) seven subsonic fighters were modernized – five single-seat AF-1B and two two-seat AF-1C.
O AF-1 is an intercept and attack aircraft operated from airfields or aircraft carriers as a vector for the squadron's air defense. The modernized aircraft of the Brazilian Navy received new navigation systems, weapons, power generation, computers, tactical communication and sensors, including a state-of-the-art multimode radar and a new operating system.
In addition to the modernization, the cell was revitalized, increasing the useful life of the aircraft.
Modernization provides pilots with situational awareness and familiarity with the operations of modern combat aircraft systems, essential and relevant criteria for the current combat scenario.
Still within the modernization program carried out by Embraer, a high-fidelity flight simulator was developed so that the Brazilian Navy can carry out pilot training, thus increasing safety in its operations.
Briefing and debriefing stations were also provided, used in the training and proficiency of the pilots, enabling better use, cost reduction and greater efficiency in the planning and execution of missions.
