Eurowings has entered into a five-year contract to implement the Bag Journey, by SITA, aiming to track enger baggage information in real time throughout the trip. The solution aims to improve enger experience and baggage operations, reducing the overall cost of mishandling.
Bag Journey offers an end-to-end view of the luggage trajectory, from the moment the enger checks in until it is collected upon disembarkation. With the SITA solution, the Eurowings team will know where each bag is throughout the journey, from check-in at the airport, including accurate, real-time details. In the future, the airline will be able to share baggage tracking data with engers using the Bag Journey API, also from SITA. This will provide customers with the peace of mind of knowing that their belongings will arrive with them at their destination.
Lost baggage is a critical factor for the aviation industry and costs billions annually. According to report of Insights in IT for Baggage – 2023 (SITA’s 2023 Baggage IT Insights, in English), from SITA, the rate of lost baggage increased by 74,7% in 2022, reaching 7,6 bags per thousand engers. This growth can be attributed to the jump in air travel.
With the ongoing staff shortage challenges facing airlines, airports and ground operations, the industry is focusing on achieving more results with fewer resources. Therefore, the help of intelligent baggage management technologies, such as Bag Journey, is essential.
By implementing the Bag Journey solution, Eurowings complies with IATA baggage tracking resolution 753, which requires airlines to monitor bags at four main stages: check-in, boarding an aircraft, transfers and disembarkation. Through SITA, the solution will be integrated into the majority of airports where the airline operates.
Additionally, the technology includes the WorldTracer® app, which tracks lost or delayed luggage. At smaller airports, Eurowings has the option of using the company's mobile bag scanning solution, Bag Journey NetScan, which offers the same monitoring capability.
