It will take about eight months from preparations to the participation of the Brazilian Air Force (FAB) in the 12th edition of LAAD Defense & Security(International Defense and Security Fair).
The event brings together manufacturers and suppliers of technologies, equipment and services for the Armed Forces, auxiliary forces, as well as security managers from large corporations, service concessionaires and infrastructure. It is an opportunity for the FAB to present its strategic projects to the public. The 2019 edition, held between April 2 and 5, takes place at the Riocentro Exhibition Pavilion, in Rio de Janeiro (RJ).
Every two years, the largest and most important defense and security event in Latin America has the institutional of the Ministry of Defense. The organization foresees actions coordinated by the Commands of the Brazilian Navy, the Brazilian Army and the Air Force – the latter through its General Staff (EMAER).
“This is an extremely valuable moment for the Air Force Command, which takes advantage of the set of possibilities, offered every two years, to publicize the activities developed by the institution to a select audience of experts, fans of matters related to defense and also for Brazilian citizens who visit the fair”, highlights the EMAER representative responsible for coordinating the FAB's participation in LAAD 2019, Colonel Aviador Helcio José Jasiocha Soares.
LAAD 2019 includes a program aimed not only at projecting the image of Brazil and national defense institutions abroad, but also at encouraging the insertion of companies from the Defense Industrial Base (BID) in the international context of technology manufacturers and suppliers , equipment and services for the Armed Forces, police, special forces and corporate security companies. Within this context, the Air Force presents its strategic projects at the event: the KC-390 freighter; the F-39 Gripen multi-mission fighter aircraft; and the Strategic Space Systems Program (PESE), in addition to other projects of interest to Brazil in the aerospace sector.
According to Coronel Soares, the sharing of information and the exchange of knowledge favor the celebration of new s with executives from companies linked to the sectors of logistics and science and technology. “The reception and the bilateral s that are established with the official delegations of the Air Forces present at LAAD provide diverse opportunities for the establishment of exchanges, technical visits and cooperation agreements in the sectors of logistics, operational, teaching and t scientific-technological development. With regard to companies, possibilities also arise that go beyond knowledge of existing technology or the simple acquisition of materials and equipment, mainly in the field of t development with the science and technology sectors of the Air Force”, he says.
Among those invited to LAAD 2019 are Brazilian and foreign authorities from various sectors: ministers, representatives of the defense area, military, auxiliary forces authorities, military attaches, executives from the defense and security industry and government agencies, as well as professionals from press. This year, around 38 visitors are expected to visit the fair, where the 9th International Symposium on Military Logistics is also held.
FAB at LAAD 2019
Details about each FAB project can be seen at the fair. Models, interactive tables and technical data illustrate the numerous activities carried out in favor of aerospace defense. “It is an important opportunity because it is the largest defense fair in Latin America where the FAB has the chance to exhibit its strategic projects, its products and reaffirm the importance given to technological evolution. Here, the Air Force shows what it has to offer and is updated in the global technological context”, concludes the General Coordinator of Social Communication Actions, Lieutenant Colonel Denys Martins De Oliveira.
Of the 14 strategic projects presented by the FAB at LAAD 2019, twelve are from the Aeronautics Science and Technology Department (DCTA), one from the Preparation Command (COMPREP) and one from the Airspace Control Department (DECEA). Are they:
PITER-N – The project, focused on the development of technology, aims at the automatic extraction of information from a large amount of images and data in the shortest possible time. The goal is real-time data processing.
INERCIAL TO OPTICAL FIBER (IFO) – Its objective is the development of a Fiber Optic Inertial Measurement Unit (UMI) (IFO) in the FAB, as a strategic component of national sovereignty, with application in war systems.
ERISA-D – It was conceived in order to establish a system to provide knowledge and means of prevention, mitigation, protection and control necessary to guarantee the safety of an operation and of the personnel of sectors or operational units of the FAB that act in scenarios subject to the harmful effects of ionizing radiation .
SENSOR CALIBRATION – Provides for the Calibration of Orbital and Airborne Imaging Sensors for the Air Force Command (COMAER), with a view to the implementation of the Carponis System, of the Strategic Space Systems Program (PESE).
AERIAL SIMULATION ENVIRONMENT (ASA) – The objective is the development of an aerospace scenario simulation environment to identify, describe, model and evaluate operational capabilities and missions in the Air Force.
ENGINE L75 – A Liquid Propellant Rocket Engine for upper stages of Satellite Launch Vehicles; it will use liquid oxygen and ethanol as a propellant pair, pressurized by a turbopump and will be capable of generating 75 kN of thrust in a vacuum.

5000N TURBORJECTOR (TR5000) – A project to develop a national turbojet with a nominal thrust of 5000N that also aims to expand the testing infrastructure for the development of gas turbine engines at the DCTA.
VLM-1/VS50 – The VLM-1 project is focused on the development of a rocket destined to launch special payloads or microsatellites (up to 150 kg) in equatorial and polar or re-entry orbits, with three solid propellant stages in its basic configuration: two stages with the S50 engine, with about 10 tons of propellant, and an orbitalizer stage, with the S44 engine.
IFF MODE 4 NATIONAL (IFFM4BR) – IFF systems (Identify Friend or Foe) identify platforms (aircraft and vessels) in combat, ing rules of engagement to allow safe use of Beyond Visual Range (BVR) missiles and prevent fratricide. The National Mode 4 IFF project aims to develop and qualify the main components of the System, among them the national cryptocomputer, equipped with State cryptographic algorithms. The aim is to enable the FAB to carry out safe and autonomous classification of platforms.
STRATEGIC SPACE SYSTEMS PROGRAM (PESE) – Approved by the Ministry of Defense on July 30, 2018 in compliance with the provisions of the National Defense Strategy, the PESE is managed by the Commission for the Coordination and Implementation of Space Systems (CCISE) and provides dual products (civilian and military) to be used in an integrated way for the benefit of all Brazilian society. It is capable of providing communications, Earth observation, mapping information and space monitoring services.
In addition to the Geostationary Defense and Strategic Communications Satellite (SGDC-1), launched in 2017, from 2021 other satellites should come into operation such as the constellation Carponis (optical remote sensing), SGDC-2, ATTICORA (tactical communications), and LESSONIA (radar remote sensing). PESE also includes the segment of access to space by means of launch vehicles (VLM and Família Aquila) and the facilities of the Alcântara Launch Center (CLA).
GRIPEN (F-X2) – The F-X2 project aims to acquire 36 multipurpose aircraft to replace, in the short term, the MIRAGE 2000 aircraft, decommissioned in 2013, and, in the long term, the F-5M and A1M. The purpose is to modernize and standardize the fleet, with a view to fulfilling the FAB's constitutional mission, enabling the development of the national defense industry with a focus on technology transfer.

The Gripen will be a multipurpose aircraft that will be able to fulfill a wide range of actions of the Military Aerospace Power, in order to guarantee the exploitation of information, the control of the air, the strategic projection of Aerospace Power, the interdiction of the battlefield and also combat sustainment.
NATIONAL MULTIMISSION AIRCRAFT (KC-390) – The largest military aircraft ever produced in Brazil, the KC-390 is a strategic project composed of state-of-the-art embedded systems. It combines the issuance of requirements and packages of “offset”, in order to boost various sectors of the Defense Industrial Base (IDB).

With the capacity to operate in different scenarios, from the Amazon Rainforest to the Antarctic airstrips, the KC-390 can be used in a series of missions, involving logistical transport and in-flight refueling. The aircraft is able to accommodate large equipment, such as armaments, semi-disassembled aircraft and even armored vehicles, with a maximum capacity of 23 tons.
REMOTE TWR – Designed to optimize existing technical and operational resources through the deployment of Remote Air Traffic Services at regional airfields. It is expected that it will enter into operation for certification in 2019, at the Santa Cruz Airfield (R-TWR SC), in compliance with the requirements of Air Force Directive 100.
OPERATIONAL PREPARATION PLANNING PROCESS (PPL-PO) – This is a methodology, developed in 2018 by COMPREP, which makes it possible to systematize the institutional planning process. Enables the logical-rational chaining of all phases that make up a planning process. Its use aims to ensure the complete analysis of the situation, the detailed programming of operational preparation and the systematic follow-up of projected actions.
To explain every detail of the 14 projects, the Air Force Command set up a 250 square meter structure at its main stand at LAAD 2019. In addition, another 198 square meters are used for institutional meetings and an external area of 2.520 square meters for the exposure of the Remote Point Power Module (MAPRE) and the suborbital vehicle (VSB-30).
