To increase the number of aircraft controlled in the airspace of Rio Grande do Sul, the Brazilian Air Force (FAB) On May 12th and 13th, it transported a TPS-B05 radar to Canoas (RS). The equipment was being used in Chapecó (SC) and is now on Rio Grande do Sul soil to reestablish radar operations at the Porto Alegre Terminal, affected by the floods in RS.
During the mission, the Aranha and Mangrulho squadrons of the 1st Communications and Control Group (1st GCC) were involved in complex work. At the same time that the radar was dismantled in Santa Catarina, the ground was prepared in Canoas to receive the sensor and put it into operation as quickly as possible.
According to Aeronautics, the transportation of the radar was carried out with the aircraft KC-390 Millennium, FAB 2855 of the Zeus Squadron. A total of 25 soldiers were involved in the operation, as well as two trucks, a Munck truck, a minibus and a small truck.
The radar movement aims to improve the flow of air traffic and enable more effective coordination of aircraft in search and rescue missions, in addition to facilitating the approach of aircraft involved in transporting supplies and strengthening flight safety standards.
Manufactured by the North American company Lockheed Martin, the TPS-B34 is a defense and air traffic control radar. The FAB has four of these sensors, each capable of detecting aircraft up to 460 km away.
