FlyDubai will equip 30 Boeing 737-800 NG aircraft in its fleet with a pair of Split Scimitar Winglets, a new winglet technology launched in this decade that enables 1,5% fuel savings on long-haul flights.
The company is going to make this change at its own maintenance center, in Dubai, between 2019 and October 2020. The first aircraft has already entered the fleet, performing a flight on September 27, after a few days stopped in the hangar to receive the two new components.
The Scimitar Winglets will be installed on each aircraft during the scheduled maintenance period. It is noteworthy that FlyDubai has 43 Boeing 737-800NG aircraft in its fleet.
The calculation is that the investment in the purchase and installation of the Scimitar Winglets will be recovered over three years of operation.
