General Electric (GE), the US engine manufacturer, confirmed this week that approval has been granted to supply its LEAP-1C engine for the COMAC C919, following a crisis involving the US and Chinese Governments.

Approval is expected to last at least four years and will be a good dose of good news for GE as the company grapples with slowing demand for new aircraft.

As reported by Reuters, the Trump istration this week announced licensing approval for General Electric (GE) to supply engines for China's future C919. The C919, under development by COMAC, is considered a competitor to the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320.

Earlier this year, the US was debating a denial of GE's request to supply engines for the C919. GE has applied for approval to supply its CFM LEAP-1C engine for the next series-production aircraft, which is expected to be ready to fly commercially in 2021.

However, in February, Trump spoke out on the matter, making it clear what outcome he wanted. In a series of tweets, the US president said:

“I want China to buy our jet engines, the best in the world … I want to make doing business with the United States easier, it's not difficult. Everyone in my istration is being told, no excuses... THE UNITED STATES IS OPEN FOR BUSINESS! ”
