GOLLOG, the logistics solutions unit of GOL Airlines, carried out yesterday (07) the transport of an anteater, considered the smallest of the anteater species. The action was a success and Yoyo is doing well in her new habitat. Transport was carried out in partnership with Instituto Tamanduá and ZooParque de Itatiba.
Yoyo was transported in a wooden box compatible with its size and species, produced especially for its displacement, as an anteater had never been transported by plane before.
Instituto Tamanduá, located in Parnaíba (PI), was founded in 2005 with the objective of promoting the conservation of Xenarthra: anteaters, armadillos and sloths, the oldest and most exclusive species in the Americas, with more or less 5 million years. In 2017, six new species for the genus Cyclopes didactylus were described, after more than 10 years of research in the Amazon, northeastern Brazil and museum collections.
“In 2015, the Instituto Tamanduá team arrived at the Delta do Parnaíba, where there is a portion of the northeastern subpopulation of this species, considered a significant evolutionary unit, which may be the response of the distribution on the Brazilian coast, since the Delta is considered a bridge between the Amazon and the Atlantic Forest”, describes the biologist at Instituto Tamanduá, Karina Theodoro Molina.
“The ZooParque de Itatiba (SP) is one of the Instituto Tamanduá’s partners in the project to conserve the anteater in the Delta, mainly with research on the species, which is why we decided to keep it here”, complete.
Yoyo is the only known adult anteater kept under human care in Brazil. It was delivered by a citizen to IBAMA, at Sede Parnaíba (PI), in June 2021.
The animal arrived in a state of extreme thinness and with signs of lack of vitamins in the body. Thanks to the efforts of Instituto Tamanduá, Yoyo managed to recover remarkably.
“GOLLOG is aware of the importance of wildlife conservation for the environment, a theme that is part of GOL's Environmental Management System (EMS). We always contribute with NGOs for the delicate transport of animals, which demand expertise from the professionals involved and special care in handling and packaging them, so that they arrive safely and directly into nature”, says Daniel Bassi, GOL's Market and Products coordinator.
Through the specialized GOLLOG Animals service, the company is prepared to transport domestic and wild animals, in special boxes and in compliance with civil aviation rules, for total safety and conservation of the species.
