Government wants Virgin Atlantic flights from London to Brazil

Strengthening and expanding the Brazilian airline network with new flights and international routes was the focus of the meeting between Embratur, representatives of São Paulo International Airport (GRU Airport) and the European airline, Virgin Atlantic, held on Tuesday (16/ 08) this week.

The meeting, which took place via videoconference, focused on the company's interest in investing in Brazil.

The idea of ​​expanding the international air network is treated as a priority by the Agency. During the meeting, Silvio Nascimento explained the importance of securing new flights and routes to the country.

“Without a doubt, the attraction of foreign tourists is directly linked to the revival of the aviation sector and, therefore, Embratur has established permanent with airlines from different countries”, highlighted.

Billionaire Richard Branson is known as the founder of Virgin Atlantic.

A Virgin Atlantic has already threatened to operate flights between London and Guarulhos Airport, in the metropolitan region of São Paulo. The company's debut was scheduled for March 2020, the same month that the Covid-19 pandemic began in Brazil. For this reason, the company suspended the debut of the route, and so far leaves its plans open.

The new Virgin flight should be operated by a Boeing 787 of the company, with a total duration of 11h55 (expected).

Another point raised by Embratur was the growth in the flow of international tourists in Brazil, a factor that encourages the inclusion of new flights later this year. The country received, in the first six months of 2022 alone, 1.222.536 foreigners with tourist visas, a number greater than the entire year of 2021 (596.745) and about 660% more when compared to the same period of 2021.

Also participating in the meeting for Embratur were the director of Marketing, Intelligence and Communication, Karisa Nogueira; Advertising, Propaganda and Digital Marketing manager, André Reis; advisor to the Presidency, Rafael Luisi; and the supervisor of the Management of Units Abroad and istrative Processes, Daniela Reple.

According to the National Civil Aviation Agency (Anac), the international air network in Brazil resumed its pace in July 2022, operating again above the 70% of the numbers reached in 2019.

The 3.751 flights ed in the last month are equivalent to 72,33% of the July 2019 capacity and they already sur the whole of 2020, when 22.353 flights arrived in the country. Still according to a survey by Embratur with Anac and airlines, 89 new flights and 44 additional frequencies are planned until February of next year.

Just to mention some recent actions, this month, in a meeting between the institution, the Ministry of Tourism and JetSmart, the airline announced the expansion of flights in Brazil, connecting cities in the country to cities in Chile and Argentina.

At Fiexpo Latin America, held in Panama, Embratur participated in a meeting with Copa Airlines and, after the meeting, the airline confirmed the increase in the number of flights, with new routes to Porto Alegre, Manaus, Belo Horizonte, Brasília, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo until the end of 2022.
