One of the largest airlines in Brazil, LATAM, has just opened a selection process for co-pilots with registration valid until 1/12. However, this is good news for the pilot market, especially for those who haven't flown for a long time. However, is the line of pilots looking for a better job now finally moving?
Well, let's analyze some data made available by ANAC. Currently, there are 8.462 aircraft flying in a regular condition, in of airworthiness, according to the aircraft spreadsheet made available by the RAB in September 2023. In this number we consider all single-engine piston engines, jets, airline planes, etc.
What about active pilot licenses? Well, according to the Brazilian Aeronautics Code, a license is definitive, however, qualifications always have an expiration date. With this, ANAC states that today there are 51.422 active airplane licenses, that is, they are still valid until the date of publication of this article.
Just a curiosity, the Aeroflap team identified that the BE40 (or Hawker 400) portfolio appears to be one of the most “valuable” in the medium and long term, since today there are 153 active licenses for the jet for 67 planes flying regularly, which which equates to an average of 2,28 aeronauts per plane, which is not bad, since the BE40 is “dual pilot”. Furthermore, it considers an annual and constant growth of this fleet, which jumped from 54 in April 2022, to 67 in September 2023. On the other hand, still of the executive planes, there are 270 active Phenom qualifications, for 164 regular aircraft, equivalent an average of 1,64 pilots for each plane, which is approved as a “single pilot”.
Finally, of the total number of qualifications reported above, the agency still defines that 23.796 people have at least one active aircraft license.
Now, looking at the number of aircraft license issuances (PP, PC and PLA), we see an almost constant decline from 2013 to 2022, with 2020 (2493) being the lowest number.
Ultimately, it would be hasty to say that aeronauts will see better horizons for the coming years, or even to say how many of the 23.796 pilots are really ready to select an airline or take command of an executive aircraft. However, it is a fact that a major contract made by any airline today in Brazil generates a positive impact, even if sensitive in the short term. The important thing, however, is to be prepared for the next opportunities.
