In addition to this work, the state-owned company will take the opportunity to inaugurate the new maneuvering yard and the duplication of the access road to the Airport.

The runway was expanded by 600 meters, going from 2195 to 2795 meters. In addition to greater operational safety, the improvement will provide an increase in the number of cities served nonstop from Foz, with the possibility of flights to Central America and the United States.

The investment of R$ 53,9 million comes from an agreement signed between Itaipu and Infraero, which contributed with 80% and 20%, respectively. Work started in February 2020.

In March, the expansion of the aircraft yard was also concluded, with an investment of R$ 9 million. The intervention secured four more parking positions for commercial aircraft, increasing service capacity by 57%.

Other improvements, also carried out in partnership between Infraero and Itaipu, were the duplication of the access road to the airport and the implementation of a bicycle path, completed in October 2020. With an investment of R$ 6,14 million, the works aim to improve fluid arrivals and departures of vehicles at the terminal and ensuring safety for cyclists.

“Foz do Iguaçu is one of the main tourist destinations in Brazil and, with the completion of these works at the airport, we are able to receive more travelers who come to the city for business or tourism. Now, we have a terminal consistent with the importance and relevance of Foz”, said the president of Infraero, Brigadier Paes de Barros.

For the Brazilian General Director of Itaipu, General Joaquim Silva e Luna, the delivery of the runway is the “realization of a dream”.

“When I arrived here, two years ago, one of the first conversations I had with the governor was about the importance of this work for the region, which has tourism as its main economic vocation. Seeing this dream come true is a huge satisfaction for Itaipu”, highlighted.

In February last year, Infraero handed over the works to renovate and expand the airport's enger terminal.

With the end of the work, which received an investment of R$ 42,4 million, the processing capacity of travelers practically doubled, going from 2,6 million to 5 million engers a year.

Among the improvements implemented, we highlight changes in the check-in area, new departure lounge for domestic and international flights, expansion of spaces for commercial areas; in addition to new restrooms, an escalator and luggage carousels.

The terminal also gained two new elevators and four new boarding bridges, which make the movement of engers embarking or disembarking in Foz more fluid.
