LATAM was one of the highlights of MRO Latin America 2023, the most important aviation maintenance event in Latin America held in Buenos Aires (Argentina) on February 22nd and 23rd.
The company was invited to present to the participants of MRO Latin America the details of the use of drones in the inspection of their aircraft. The presentation was given by Everton Amieiro, Operational coordinator at LATAM Brasil, who told the audience how the pioneering use of drones made the process of external inspection of the company's aircraft in the country up to 12 times faster than the traditional inspection. In 2022, incidentally, the technology began to be exported to the LATAM operation in Chile.
The entire LATAM external drone inspection process is carried out on its Airbus A320 family aircraft that undergo heavy maintenance, where between 1.600 and 2.000 detailed photos of the entire fuselage, wings and empennage are collected, using artificial intelligence to identify possible damage. and necessary repairs.
The inspection method is 100% autonomous and generates even more efficiency and quality compared to the manual process. Another advantage is related to resource savings. This is because, by keeping records in the cloud and updated in real time, paper printing costs have been eliminated.
The use of drones also increases process reliability due to inspection standardization. The technology is the result of a partnership between LATAM and Donecle, the French company that developed the equipment.

LATAM's efficiency and excellence in aircraft maintenance
In 2022, it is worth ing that LATAM also implemented the use of augmented reality glasses for mechanics to perform aircraft maintenance at the company's 20 bases in Brazil. The company was the first airline in Latin America to use equipment that guarantees greater efficiency and agility in complex aircraft maintenance and inspection activities.
Another recent technological advance by LATAM in Brazil was the adoption of a electronic system for maintenance records of aircraft and aeronautical components.
The company was authorized by the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) to use this document format to perform and record maintenance actions on aircraft, in addition to meeting all the requirements of Resolution No. 458 and Supplementary Instruction (IS) No. 43.9- 004 of ANAC, which allows the use of digital systems to replace paper documents.
