International tourist traffic already reaches 57% of pre-pandemic levels

International tourist activity is in a broad recovery and is already reaching numbers close to those ed before the Covid-19 pandemic. According to the latest World Tourism Barometer, released by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), international tourist arrivals on trips around the world almost tripled from January to July 2022 (172% higher) compared to the same period in 2021 The number is 57% of pre-pandemic levels.

It is estimated that 474 million international tourists have traveled in the first seven months of this year, a number well above the 175 million computed in the same months of 2021. Between June and July alone, there were 207 million arrivals, 44% of the total recorded in January to July 2022 and more than double that recorded in the same period last year.

According to the UNWTO, the constant recovery is a reflection of the strong pent-up demand for international travel, as well as the easing of travel restrictions.

AMERICAS – Compared to 2021, the Americas (+103%) and Africa (+171%) recorded strong growth between January-July this year, reaching 65% and 60% of 2019 levels, respectively.

Europe and the Middle East were the regions showing the fastest recovery, with arrivals reaching 74% and 76% of 2019 levels respectively.

In Asia and the Pacific (+165%) arrivals more than doubled in the first seven months of 2022, and in the Middle East, international arrivals almost quadrupled between January-July 2022 (+287%).

FOREIGNERS IN BRAZIL – An indicator that demonstrates the strong recovery of international tourism in Brazil is the growth in foreign spending. According to the Central Bank of Brazil (Bacen), between January and July this year, foreign tourists spent more than US$ 2,7 billion in the country. The amount is 84% ​​higher than that recorded in the same period of 2021, when the sector raised US$ 1,5 billion.

According to the Brazilian Agency for International Tourism Promotion (Embratur), by the month of May, the country had received more than one million foreigners. The number of travelers is the highest since the beginning of the pandemic, in 2020. The expectation is that by the end of the year 4,2 million foreign tourists will visit Brazil.
