According to local media, the plane, described as a “training aircraft”, suffered a technical failure in flight and crashed near Lake Parishan, in Kazerun district. The pilot, the jet's only crew member, ejected and was subsequently rescued. He was taken to hospital where he is being treated for a fractured pelvis, the district governor said.

The Su-22 is an export version of the Su-17 fighter-bomber, developed in the mid-1960s by the then Soviet Union. The single engine has variable geometry wings, a pair of 30 mm cannons, can carry 4 tons of bombs, missiles and rockets and is capable of reaching 1400 km/h.

The model was exported to 28 countries, most of which have already removed it from service, although it is still in operation in Iran, Poland, Vietnam, Libya, Syria, Angola and Yemen.
