Kerosene: Air sector and government debate in search of solutions to price hikes

The Brazilian Airlines Association (ABEAR) participated today (31) in the first meeting of the permanent debate table with the government to seek solutions to the skyrocketing aviation kerosene price (QAV), item of greatest economic inefficiency in commercial aviation.

The meeting was held with the Chief of Staff for Government Analysis of the Civil House, coordinated by Eduardo Aggio de Sá. Also present at the meeting were representatives of airlines, the Latin American and Caribbean Air Transport Association (ALTA), the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the Board of Representatives of International Airlines in Brazil (JURCAIB).

“The government is always available for an open, frank, objective and purposeful dialogue so that we can how to increase Brazil's competitiveness and how to make the country more prosperous”, said the Deputy Head of Government Analysis at the Civil House, Eduardo Aggio de Sá.

During the meeting, the creation of a working group with all participants was suggested to increase transparency and competition in the fuel market.

The president of ABEAR, Eduardo Sanovicz, presented a diagnosis of the airline industry and the main bottlenecks that prevent a vigorous resumption of commercial aviation, which is still facing the impacts of the biggest crisis in its history, triggered by the new coronavirus pandemic. Sanovicz and other participants at the meeting also highlighted the high price of QAV, which from January to May accumulates an increase of almost 49%. Last year, the QAV recorded a 92% increase compared to 2020.

The concern with the tax burden and with the appreciation of the dollar against the real was also discussed with the representative of the Civil House, since more than 50% of the sector's costs are dollarized.

“This meeting is the first step of many others that ABEAR and other entities representing commercial aviation will take in the sense of expanding the debate and dialogue with the government, in search of solutions that minimize the impact of the Custo Brasil for the sector. Only in this way will we be able to seek a consistent resumption of air operations, flying more and more and transporting more people to destinations that are still unattended, contributing to the development of the country”, said Sanovicz.
