The Smoke Squadron Brazilian air force – popular name of the Air Demonstration Squadron (EDA) – completed 70 years in 2022. About to close the year, the Casa da Moeda (CMB) made available on Saturday (10) commemorative medals for the anniversary of the FAB unit.
Headquartered at the Academia da Força Aérea (AFA) in Pirassununga (SP), Fumaça has already performed almost 4000 aerial demonstrations in Brazil and worldwide. Currently equipped with Embraer A-29 Super Tucano, the team performed its first performance on May 14, 1952, in Rio de Janeiro, the date on which its birthday is celebrated.

Over its 70-year history, planes like the T-6 Texan, T-24 Fouga Magister, T-25 Universal and T-27 Tucano ed through the hands of skilled EDA aviators.

To commemorate the expressive mark of the FAB acrobatic team, the Casa da Moeda created a special medal, designed by Érika Takeyama and Monique Porto.

According to the CMB, the obverse presents “the shield of the Smoke Squadron represented in 3D”, while the other face has in the foreground, at the bottom, a pilot in the cockpit. “At the top, around the edge, there is the inscription “SQUADRILHA DA FUMAÇA” in bas-relief. In the centre, the first [T-6] and current [A-29] plane model used by the Smoke Squadron stands out in colored pad printing. The background, in bas-relief, includes the caption “70 ANOS” and the era “1952 • 2022”.
Only 200 units are available, 130 in bronze and 70 in silver. The medals are 50mm in diameter and can be purchased on the Mint – Medal Club. While the bronze medal goes for R$170, the silver is much more “salty”: R$620 each.
EDA currency
In addition to the CMB medal, the EDA itself also sells a coin referring to the 70 years completed in 2022. The product is available on the website Smoke Squadron Association, maintained by the squadron itself, for R$68.
