The city of Canoas, located in the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre, was officially recognized as “Cidade do Avião” by the state government of Rio Grande do Sul. The bill was approved on June 15th and was sanctioned on Thursday (08th) by Governor Eduardo Leite.
In 1937, when it was still part of the municipality of Gravataí, an army airfield was installed in Canoas. Today, the city is home to the Southern Air Command (V COMAR) and Wing 3, Base Aérea de Canoas, a unit of the Brazilian Air Force that houses three squadrons with aircraft: 5º Esquadrão de Transporte Aéreo, Pégaso, which operates C -95 Bandeirante, C-97 Brasília and C-98 Caravan; the 2nd Squadron of the 7th Aviation Group, Phoenix, a maritime patrol unit, with the P-95 Bandeirulha; and the 1st/14th GAv, the Pampa Squadron, which operates with F-5EM/FM Tiger II fighters.

Every year, on the 12th of October, the base holds the traditional Expoaer, an event that has been taking place for 34 years, where the gates are opened so that visitors can get to know the FAB facilities and aircraft. In the last edition in 2019, around 10 thousand people were at the base.

The city also has four aircraft on display, two AT-26 Xavante and two Gloster Meteor. Inside Wing 3 there are three other planes: a TF-33, a C-95 and an F-5E.
The bill was created by state deputy Lieutenant-Colonel Zucco, based on the Aviãoteca project. Presented in February 2021 by the Municipal Secretariat of Culture of Canoas, the Aviãoteca project aims to build a cultural complex, whose main attraction will be a library installed inside a large aircraft in Parque Eduardo Gomes.
“A great acknowledgment of the history of Canoas and the importance that aviation has for our city. Congratulations Canoes! Congratulations to Deputy Lieutenant Colonel Zucco, who is the author of this proposal that was made law by our Governor, Eduardo Leite”, pointed out the mayor of Canoas, Jairo Jorge.

The Municipal Secretary of Culture, Pinheiro Neto, celebrated the approval of the Law. “I would like to thank Lieutenant-Colonel Zucco, state deputy, who used the Aviãoteca complex to the justification for the project that recognizes Canoas as the City of the Airplane, and also Governor Eduardo Leite for the sanction. It is a historic gift for Canoas.”
According to the City Hall of Canoas, the Aviãoteca space will also have a flight simulator, a mini aviation museum, a cafeteria, ecobikes, an art gallery and demarcated spaces that present, in a playful way, the main sights of the six continents of the planet earth: America, Europe, Asia, Africa, Oceania and Antarctica.
