On July 9th of this year, a tailstrike (term used to define when the rear part of an aircraft touches the runway during takeoff or landing) severe occurred with a Boeing Latam 777-300 during takeoff from Milan, due to incorrect information provided by the pilots.
The preliminary ANSV report, published on August 23, indicated that the plane's rear fuselage trailed for 720 meters before taking off, while surveillance cameras recorded clouds of dust and smoke. The aircraft was transporting 398 people towards São Paulo.
It was revealed by the investigation that the pilots entered incorrect data into the on-board computer, which resulted in an attempt to take off at an inappropriate speed. Instead of the actual fuel weight, “Zero Fuel Weight” was entered, which led to a very low rotational speed.
The impact of the incident went beyond technical issues, significantly affecting Latam's operations. THE Boeing 777 was stranded on the ground for several days before being brought back to São Paulo for extensive repairs. The company is working with the Italian air safety authority to ensure the plane's safe return to operations.
The final case report is expected to be published within a few months, providing further clarification on what happened.
