Pratt & Whitney engine for the ATR 42-600S aimed at short runways is certified in Canada

Pratt & Whitney Canada and ATR announced the certification of the PW127XT-L engine by Transport Canada. This engine variant offers increased performance to meet the requirements for short runway takeoff by the ATR 42-600S variant. This certification is a key milestone in the development of the program and an important step towards increasing regional connectivity and airport accessibility around the world.

The ATR 42-600S will reduce takeoff and landing distances to just 800 meters under standard flight conditions. It will be able to access 1.000 airports globally with short runways, providing local populations with greater, faster, more comfortable and low-emission access to the global economy, healthcare, education and culture, creating new business opportunities for airlines.

Edward Hoskin, vice-president of engineering at Pratt & Whitney Canada, said: “The PW127XT-L marks the 200th engine type certification achieved by Pratt & Whitney Canada and offers 20% lower maintenance costs, 40% uptime. improved wing design and 3% better fuel efficiency and reduced CO2 emissions that characterize the PW127XT engine series. ”

Validation of the engine modification by EASA is scheduled for before the end of the year. Integration of the modified engine with other aircraft systems will become ATRilitis' main focus, aiming for a 2025 entry into service.

ATR has already received more than 20 orders for the ATR 42-600S and sees opportunities for the aircraft to operate in various regions around the world, including Europe, with Portugal, Greece, Iceland, Italy and Norway as main areas of interest.
