Private helicopters provide assistance to victims on the North Coast of São Paulo

by Micael

The heavy rains that devastated the North Coast of the state of São Paulo during Carnival week caught the attention of society. Entire cities like São Sebastião and Bertioga have been completely isolated since last Saturday night after more than ten access points to the north coast became impractical due to landslides that invaded the highways in both directions, making any access to these cities unfeasible.

According to the São Paulo Civil Defense monitoring center, more than 683 mm per square meter of water were recorded in Bertioga and 627 mm in São Sebastião. What's worse is that the forecast is for more rain, which could increase the number of landslides and floods, increasing the number of victims and homeless people as a result of record rainfall in the region.

The governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas, flew over the areas affected by the floods, when a state of public calamity was declared in these regions.

By ocean, rescue teams are unable to access due to the strong winds that make the sea extremely rough, in addition to the large amount of rubble, trees and furniture from houses and businesses that have been deposited on the beach, preventing vessels from reaching the victims. .

Under this chaotic context, once again the following rotary wings play a fundamental role in ing the victims of what is the biggest environmental disaster in the history of São Sebastião and Bertioga. With the roads completely blocked, firefighters cannot access land to the region, using aircraft from the Public Power for the mission.

However, the number of devices (around seven machines) became insufficient to meet all the demand. At that time, once again private companies and property owners helicopters lend their pilots and aircraft to help transport medical equipment for emergency care, medicine, food, clothing and water to regions inaccessible by land.

Inside several heliports and hangars scattered mainly in the capital and metropolitan area of São Paulo, the machines depart towards the coast, where they land on avenues or soccer fields close to the points that were most affected by the heavy rains. Once on the ground, residents who have lost everything and the crew themselves help with the donations received.

Although the number of aircraft being voluntarily employed on these trips has been increasing, it is still insufficient. This is because the number of people in need of help in that region and in neighboring cities is large, and there is still no forecast for the complete release of the lanes so that assistance via land can reach points where until now they are under rubble or covered by water.

Therefore, several helicenters and hangars are releasing the landing of aircraft so that they can carry out the transport of basic food baskets, doctors and nurses to assist the victims in the coastal region.

The use of private aircraft that are employed in emergency situations and public calamities is historic in Brazil. Owners and operators of these machines have made their crews and devices available for logistical and rescue operations for several decades.

Some of these missions were immortalized in the history of the country, as in the fires of the Andraus and Joelma buildings in 1972 and 1974 respectively, where private helicopters helped to rescue people who were on the roof of the burning buildings, totaling more than four hundred people saved in both events.
