A Qatar Airways and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) producer Gevo have signed a purchase agreement under which the airline will purchase 25 million US gallons of pure SAF over five years, with deliveries expected to begin in 2028 at various airports from California.
Thus, the airline will purchase 5 million US gallons of pure SAF each year, combining it with its existing supply of conventional jet fuel and becoming the first in the Middle East and Africa region to announce a commitment to an agreement. international purchase SAF.
This partnership is part of Qatar Airways' previous commitment, with other of the oneworld Alliance, to purchase up to 200 million US gallons of SAF from Gevo. The use of SAF is a cornerstone of Qatar Airways and oneworld's plan to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. In September 2020, oneworld became the first global airline alliance to unite around a common goal to achieve carbon neutrality with zero net emissions of the component by 2050.
The alliance subsequently committed to a target of 10% sustainable use of jet fuel by 2030. Qatar Airways is very keen to increase the use of SAF at a commercial level, noting that the product to be purchased will be certified under the sustainability criteria established by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Compared to fossil-based aviation fuel, SAF results in reduced carbon dioxide emissions over its lifecycle. Current technology allows CO2 reductions with the use of SAF to reach 85% when compared to conventional aviation fuel.
Qatar Airways has made significant strides towards achieving environmental sustainability and decarbonisation, and is currently flying one of the youngest and most cost-effective fleets. It is the first airline in the Middle East to achieve the highest level accreditation in the IATA Environmental Assessment Program (IEnvA) and the first to the IATA CO2NNECT platform, offering a new voluntary carbon offset program for air cargo shipments. , continuing to advance an ambitious agenda to demonstrate environmental leadership across the global aviation industry.
