Recife Guararapes – Gilberto Freyre International Airport, managed by Aena Brasil, has been breaking records in winning punctuality awards. In March, the terminal was again elected as the best in Brazil in this regard and, this time, it also won first place in the world among equipment with 5 to 15 million seats offered per year. In the ranking of all international airports in the world, Recife took second place. Released yesterday, The On-Time Performance Monthly Report Airports survey is carried out by Cirium consultancy – one of the most important in the airline industry, and records the punctuality of terminals.
Within its category, Recife Airport obtained the highest score in the world, reaching a rate of 92,46% of operations on schedule. In the overall assessment, it was second only to Osaka International Airport in Japan. The Recife terminal improved the percentage in relation to the survey carried out by the same consultancy, earlier this year. In January, the airport had reached 88,95% of punctual operations, being the best in Brazil and the fourth in the world.
In recent years, Recife has collected awards related to quality and punctuality. In addition to the score recorded in The On-Time Performance Monthly Report Airports, by Cirium, Recife's airport won for the second consecutive year the Aviação Mais Brasil Award, from the Ministry of Ports and Airports, as the most punctual in the country in the category between 5 and 10 million engers per year.
In December 2022, the equipment in the capital of Pernambuco was voted the second best in the world by s, according to data from the consultancy AirHelp, second only to Tokyo International Airport. In 2020, it also won the award for Best Regional Terminal in Brazil at the World Airport Awards, which has been held since 1999 and is promoted by Skytrax, a British consultancy in the airport sector. In the same survey, Recife was still among the best in Latin America and those with the best team.
For health management during the pandemic, Guararapes – Gilberto Freyre also received the Safe Travels – World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), in April 2021; and the Prêmio Turismo Seguro, from the government of Pernambuco, in November 2020. Both recognized Recife Airport's efforts to combat the spread of the new coronavirus.
Since March 2022, Recife Airport has been undergoing improvements aimed at implementing the Aena Brasil standard, with more comfort, safety and agility for s. The terminal will have 60% more capacity, totaling an expansion of 24 thousand square meters. Improvements include a new international pier, four new jetways, more shops and restaurants, as well as many other amenities such as two VIP lounges. The renovation also includes automation of immigration processes, boarding access and baggage processing.
