RIOgaleão has just achieved level 3 certification from the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA), the only global airport carbon management certification program. The concessionaire met all the necessary requirements in the Optimization category, when the airport expands the scope of reducing emissions and involves third parties in the process.
Developed by the International Council of Airports in Latin America and the Caribbean (ACI-LAC), the program checks the effort of terminals through six levels, namely: mapping, reduction, optimization, neutrality, transformation and transition. RIOgaleão was already credited at level 1 – Mapping, in which it maps its carbon footprint, identifies sources and calculates annual emissions; and at level 2 – Reduction, when the reduction of emissions and compliance with targets for CO2 management are demonstrated.
Since the beginning of the concession, in 2014, RIOgaleão has invested in sustainable initiatives that aim to minimize the impact of human actions on the environment. “RIOgaleão develops its activities as one of the engines of the State’s economy, committed in a sustainable, environmental and social way to the growth of Rio de Janeiro. We are reaching a decade of Concession with more than 5 thousand environmental inspections and 39 thousand hours of environmental training at the airport site, which reinforce the commitment to balanced development”, says Alexandre Monteiro, president of RIOgaleão.
Over the last ten years, within the scope of actions relating to climate change, RIOgaleão has avoided the emission of more than 55 thousand tons of CO2 with the Solid Waste Management Program and reached the milestone of 70% recycling of waste generated in airport operation and maintenance. The work has already received an honorable mention from the Ciclo Orgânico project at Airports Going Green (2017) and won the award at Green Airport, from ACI Latin America, in the Climate Change category in 2022.
Around 60 nearby cooperative families receive recyclable materials from RIOgaleão and supplement their income. The socio-environmental development of nearby communities has already benefited more than 85 thousand people with regular Conexão Escola classes; courses in partnership with SENAC for taxi drivers, women from the Ilha do Governador Women's Association and teenagers; citizenship actions with the residents of Tubiacanga and Praia do Rosa; community gardens in public schools; educational visits in airport operations. The concessionaire is also responsible for planting 150 seedlings of native Atlantic Forest species to recover degraded areas.
Environmental awareness also involves the airport community, which undergoes constant training on the importance of individual actions in favor of the environment. The airport's sustainability team has already completed more than 39 thousand hours of training.
