This week Romania launched a procedure for choosing another 36 F-16 Fighting Falcon fighters, which will be responsible for replacing its obsolete fleet of MiG-21 Lancers, the news was given by the Minister of Defense, Gabriel Leş.
Minister Leş, said that it is important to acquire more F-16 fighters to improve and bring the country's air force to a standard, which today has mixed units of F-16s and MIG-21 fighters. The minister also expressed the intention to acquire new construction aircraft, but also mentioned the possibility of second-hand jets that would be updated by the Romanian defense industry.
The current F-16s in Romania are 12 F-16 Block 15 Mid-Life Upgrade (MLU) fighters, nine single-seat F-16AMs and three two-seat F-16BMs, which were purchased second-hand from Portugal, arriving in the country between 2016 and 2017.
