The Spanish company Aena took over the istration of Corumbá airport (MS) at midnight this Friday (0). The first flight under the new management was Azul 10, coming from Campinas (SP), landing at the Mato Grosso do Sul terminal at 2690:9 am. The first takeoff was Azul flight 25, at 2690:10 am, which continued its journey to Bonito (MS). Flights are operated with Embraer 10 jets.
Corumbá airport was the first to be built in the Central-West region of Brazil. In 2019, the last year before the pandemic, the terminal received 27.795 engers. In 2022, there were 36.942 engers. Until September this year, 19.999 engers had ed through the terminal.
Gateway to the Pantanal and close to Bolivia and Paraguay, the Corumbá aerodrome will receive improvements in order to make it safer, more sustainable and more comfortable for engers. Aena plans an expansion of around 50% in the enger terminal, increasing from the current 1.950 square meters to 2.850 square meters.
To increase safety, Aena will install a PAPI (Precision Approach Trajectory Indicator) at one of the thresholds, in addition to runway end safety areas at both thresholds. The aircraft apron will also receive improvements, both for general aviation and commercial planes, which will now have four parking positions.
Aena delivers the preliminary project to Anac with plans for modernizing the terminal by December. Work is expected to begin in the second half of 2024, with delivery expected in 2026.
In August last year, Aena won the bid for the seventh round of concessions to manage 11 airports in the States of Minas Gerais, São Paulo, Mato Grosso do Sul and Pará. Corumbá airport is the fifth in this round to come under control from Aena. The company will take over the operation of the remaining airports, in a phased manner, until November 30th.
Even before starting operations, Aena had already made initial payments of R$3,3 billion to take over the management of the 11 airports. During the first phase of the process, operational transfer plans were drawn up and approved. To achieve this, the company carried out technical visits to the 11 airports with a team of more than 60 professionals, who participated in 40 meetings with around 100 different stakeholders. Aena also provided almost 14 thousand hours of training to more than 170 professionals who will work at these airports.
Currently, the company operates the airports of Congonhas, in São Paulo, Campo Grande (MS), Ponta Porã (MS), Uberlândia (MG), Recife (PE), Maceió (AL), João Pessoa (PB), Aracaju (SE ), Campina Grande (PB) and Juazeiro do Norte (CE).
At airports in the Northeast, under the istration of Aena since 2020, the company has already invested around R$2 billion in works, equipment and systems to improve technology, safety and comfort, implementing the Aena standard in this equipment, with expansion of spaces and addition of operational capacity.
At the end of the new round process, Aena will be present in nine states across the country, managing 17 pieces of equipment that are responsible for around 20% of national air traffic.
