This was the ranking assigned for 2022 by the AirlineRatings website, in January, which is dedicated to evaluating airlines around the world, taking into criteria such as: accidents in five years; record of serious incident over two years; audits by government agencies and the aviation industry; government audits; industry-leading security initiatives; fleet age, and COVID-19 safety protocols.

“This distinction is a great honor for us. We will continue to relentlessly position safety as a top priority.”, says TAP CEO Christine Ourmières-Widener.

According to AirlineRatings.com Editor-in-Chief Geoffrey Thomas, “TAP Air Portugal has an excellent safety record and this is not surprising as it has kept its fleet young and has always looked for the best aircraft and was an early adopter of major advances in safety. Its incident record over the last two years has been one of the best and the airline has not suffered a fatality in the modern era.”

“TAP Portugal has become a reference in air safety and its COVID protocols are industry leaders”, concludes.

Gonçalo Nápoles, Safety Manager at TAP, highlights the high commitment of all employees over several years that made it possible to achieve this recognition.

The person in charge underlines that this distinction “represents the level of commitment to safety over the years, the operational excellence achieved by everyone's work and is proof that risk management work can be carried out in line with the strategy and needs of transformation of the company”.

Launched in 2013, AirlineRatings evaluates the safety and product standards of more than 400 airlines, using a star system, which it assigns according to fleet age, accident history and with safety parameters defined by International Air Transport Association (IATA) – with regard to IOSA certification –, by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and by the US Federal Aviation Authority.

Rather than just considering all incidents and rating an airline as some rating agencies do, the editors of AirlineRatings.com look at serious incidents as well and evaluate all dimensions to gauge whether they are just linked to the airline or others. aircraft manufacturer-related factors or ATC issues.

“It is critical to understand why the incident occurred and how the crew reacted”, explains Geoffrey Thomas.
