Located on an embankment on the edge of Guanabara Bay, Santos Dumont Airport is very reminiscent of an aircraft carrier with a breathtaking approach of so much beauty and adrenaline. Inaugurated in 1936, this airfield has already seen many historical facts of national aviation, such as the change from Electra to jet planes on the air bridge and the popularization of air travel in our country. For years, and up to the present day, it has partnered with Congonhas Airport, which was inaugurated at almost the same time.

It is the second busiest airport in the state of Rio de Janeiro, the SDU is, in addition to the arrivals and departures point for many visitors to the wonderful city, it is also a tourist point due to its location close to the Rio-Niterói bridge, Christ the Redeemer, Sugar Loaf and among others. other tourist locations.

Taking its name from the father of aviation, this airport has seen a few accidents but none of them fatal, all related to aircraft that almost or that left the runway and ended up in the bay, with two incredibly short runways and being one of the smallest in the world to receive jets (main with 1.323 meters and auxiliary with 1.260 meters). It does not have ILS, not even Type 1, which ends up bringing inconvenience to companies on rainy days and especially in fog, and this fact led it to be one of the pioneers in the operation of RNAV in Brazil. The airport made Gol team up with Boeing to develop a more efficient braking system, so that it could operate its 737-800 SPF operating in the country in a safer and more efficient way, setting up systems with carbon discs making braking faster than normal.

Curiosities: The SPF pack offered for Boeing 737NG aircraft was incorporated as an option in 2006 at the request of Gol Linhas Aéreas, which wanted to operate its newest aircraft at Santos Dumont Airport. Around 2013 the American manufacturer released the SPF 2.0, which includes more aerodynamic innovations and brakes produced with carbon, more resistant to overheating.
