TUI Airline has fully implemented the SITA OptiClimb solution across the group's five airlines as part of its sustainability agenda to reduce polluting gas emissions. The implementation generated savings of up to 200 kg of fuel and 600 kg of CO2 per aircraft, every day.
Takeoff is the phase of flight that consumes the most fuel. In this way, SITA OptiClimb is a predictive analysis solution, which uses the machine learning algorithm to create specific performance models for the aircraft empennage. Furthermore, the technology is equipped with 4D weather forecasts and operational flight plan data, features that make it possible to predict fuel burn scenarios. The innovation also provides pilots with information about climb and flight speed, optimizing fuel consumption without compromising travel time.
According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), fuel represents almost 30% of an airline's operating costs and is the largest contributor to aviation emissions. As a result, airlines are adopting innovative digital solutions, such as SITA OptiClimb, to deliver more immediate reductions in consumption and emissions, complementing the sector's long-term strategies, such as using sustainable aviation fuels and renewing aircraft fleets.
SITA estimates that if all airlines used OptiClimb technology, they would save approximately 5,6 million tonnes of carbon per year.
Partially used by several TUI airlines in 2022, SITA OptiClimb is today fully implemented in all five companies of the TUI Group, made up of TUI Airways, including TUI fly Belgium, TUI fly , TUI fly Netherlands and TUI fly Nordic countries. As a result, the solution provided total savings for the group of around 4.500 tons of fuel and 14.000 tons of carbon in 2022.
