Responsible for being the airport with the largest international movement of engers in Brazil, Guarulhos has two parallel runways that operate simultaneously, allowing the terminal to receive the largest flow of aircraft.
In one of its lives, YouTube channel SBGR Live recorded the moment when an Atlas Air Boeing 747-400 freighter (N492MC) took off from 28R, while another Boeing 747-400 (D-ABTK) operated flight LH506 of Lufthansa engers landed on runway 28L. The incident took place last Friday (17).
Including the rare moment of seeing two 747s operating, it draws attention to seeing a 747-400 variant operating with engers in 2023. The model was quoted to be retired by Lufthansa in 2020 due to the pandemic, but the German company ended up postponing plans of withdrawal, giving life to one of the most iconic models in the history of world aviation.
Watch the moment in the video below:
While runway 10R/28L is 3.000 meters long and 45 meters wide, runway 10L/28R is slightly larger at 3.700 meters long and 60 meters wide. The runways at Guarulhos airport are no bigger than Galeão (10-28) at 4 meters and at Gavião Peixoto airfield, at 4.967 meters, where one of Embraer's main industrial complexes in Brazil is located, and is also the biggest runway in Latin America.
In the vast majority of operations in Guarulhos, runway 10R/28L is used for landings, while the largest runway (10L/28R) is in charge of operating takeoffs. Changes in landing and takeoff functions can occur on the runways, they can happen in exceptional situations such as a medical emergency, objects on the runway and among others.
For those who like to follow in real time the operations of the international airport of Guarulhos, the YouTube channel SBGR Live shows in real time the landings and takeoffs, as well as providing the voice of the operations. To follow the live, just click here.
A SUMMARY OF GUARULHOS AIRPORT

Inaugurated on January 20, 1985, the airport of Guarulhos emerged as an alternative to enable international operations closer to the center of São Paulo, which at the time were concentrated in the airports of Viracopos and Galeão.
As the years ed, GRU Airport consolidated its role in international operations, becoming the main gateway for foreign companies in Brazil.
With that, Cumbica became the largest airport in Brazil and South America, being the second in Latin America in movement, second only to the international airport of Mexico City. Interestingly, Guarulhos is the only airport in South America to regularly receive the Airbus A380, operated by Emirates since 2017.
Recent data show that Guarulhos International Airport received around 34,4 million engers in 2022. With a total of 243.888 national and international flights, with a movement of 3,3 million engers.
Finally, GRU Airport reported that the terminal operates to 112 destinations, 60 domestic and 52 international.
