The building also follows the available space, measuring 170 meters long (door opening) and 70 meters wide. The place can up to eight aircraft from the Airbus A320neo line inside, and has several different workshops.

The hangar has two giant doors, with 8 “leaves” each, to make up the 170 meters in length.

Inaugurated in the first quarter of this year, the space was being used to preserve the fleet due to the crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. With the beginning of the resumption of flights, the complex is already carrying out various maintenance tasks.

And it was exactly the maintenance processes that we followed during our on-site visit, analyzing better how Azul takes care of its aircraft.

For some months now, the professionals working in the hangar have been helping Azul's daily operation by receiving planes that need to make special stops and also repair structures. Now in July, the building received the first aircraft for maintenance of great complexity, the heavy check.

The Airbus A320neo aircraft, registration PR-YRA, was parked for maintenance at the Azul building, in V, between July 05th and 15th. Around 70 professionals were dedicated to carrying out the service in those ten days, in a total of 4.500 hours of work.

This is the PR-YRA, Azul's first A320neo, and also the first aircraft to receive a “heavy” overhaul of the C-type, in the new maintenance hangar.

Carrying out this work is a relevant milestone for the company. According to Flavio Costa, the company's Technical-Operational vice-president, conducting this type of task “in-house” gives Azul the conditions to be more efficient and flexible with its resources.

“From the moment that we are carrying out the service, we are able to continuously improve all processes involving heavy checks. We guarantee quality in execution and also reduce costs. In addition, of course, to improving the knowledge of our technicians, protecting jobs and creating new opportunities internally and also for the market”, says the executive.

Another benefit that Azul's maintenance complex installed in Viracopos offers for the process is the structure of its own workshops.

“In these spaces, parts that need repair can be fixed and reinstalled by our team of specialists right there in the hangar. This provides enormous efficiency for the heavy check work”, explains Carlos Naufel, Technical Director at Azul.

The hangar can receive both routine and scheduled maintenance, as well as light and heavy maintenance. This 737F in the photo was recently damaged by a freight car, in the area of the green rectangle. He waits for a spar of the structure to arrive from the United States to be repaired and leave the maintenance hangar.

The site will be dedicated to performing maintenance on Azul's A320neo and A330ceo/neo family aircraft. The company plans to maintain its hangars at Pampulha Airport, which are focused on the maintenance of the ATR 72-600 and the Embraer E-Jets.
