With video: Spirit Airlines A320neo engine catches fire after bird strike

Last Sunday (3), an Airbus A320neo with registration number N922NK on Spirit Airlines flight 3044 between Atlantic City (ACY) and Fort Lauderdale (FLL) airports had to be evacuated after one of the aircraft's engines collided with a Bird.

At the time of the incident, the aircraft was preparing to take off from runway 31 in Atlantic City when the crew noticed that something had collided with the right engine (PW1127G) of the aircraft, initiating check procedures after the takeoff was aborted.

However, the crew was surprised to be alerted by the control tower of the beginning of a fire in one of the engines, initiating the aircraft evacuation procedure and requesting the airport fire brigade to contain the flames.

Several videos that are circulating on social networks, it is possible to follow the despair and anguish of the engers when they realize that the flames are spreading through the aircraft, however, everyone was quickly removed from the aircraft.

After the incident, images reveal the damage caused by the flames that left the PW1127G engine partially destroyed, in addition to the absence of a blade due to the force of the impact.

After the incident, Spitit Airlines released the following statement:

“All guests and staff evacuated the aircraft and were taken back to the terminal. We commend our crew for handling the situation quickly and safely. Our Guests will receive a full refund, a future travel voucher and the option to travel to Fort Lauderdale on another plane.”
